HELP! In this experiment what would be my control, independent variable and dependent variable?

We're doing the radish seed experiment.



We are seeing if radish seeds will grow more or less with fertilizer+water than just water alone. I think my independent variable is the fertilizer and my control is water, so what is my dependent variable? Its planted in potting soil.

Well...no. Your "control" group is actually those radish seeds that you will be attempting to grow with water alone.



The independent variable is actually the thing you are mucking about with...in your case, the influence of fertilizer on the radish growth.



In order to dot all your i's, so to speak, before anything else, you should really begin with a formal hypothesis statement. Write it out...this will impact all these things. I guess it might be something like:



Hypothesis: We anticipate that the common radish plant (Raphanus sativus or whatever), grown from seeds, will (grow more rapidly; produce more foliage; reach flowering stage earlier....whatever you expect) with the application of commerical vegetable fertilizer and water, rather than water alone.



Technically, you should also have a so-called "null-hypothesis"- something that disproves your experimental hypothesis. Like: "The application of fertilizer will effect no measurable difference in"...whatever.



Right? Your DEPENDENT variable, then, is the thing you expect the experiment to have an effect on, in this case, the plant growth, although you should be very specific NOW about what you mean by that, so they when you start measuring results, you know what to measure for, and you won't encounter ambiguities about what "growing more or less" is supposed to look like.
