The independent variable (the thing that Asch controlled) was the number of actors who gave a wrong answer. In some cases Asch had all the actors give a wrong answer, but in other conditions he had one actor give a correct answer to see how many people would be needed to get the real subject to go against the others (who were giving wrong answers) and give the right answer. So "number of actors providing the wrong answer" is the independent variable.
