Psychology Question? What Is The Dependent and Independent Variable ?

I'm doing a Research Proposal. My Proposal is " What Do Shy People Believe Caused Their Shyness ". The actual cause is NOT what the people BELIEVE caused their shyness.

I Am VERY confused. Can someone please just help me out ?

What Is the independent variable(s) and conditions

What is the dependent variable(s) and how it will be assessed ?Psychology Question? What Is The Dependent and Independent Variable ?
I don't know, i'm only 14 hehe, but i like psychology and i downloaded this once, i found these explanations of dependent and independent variables so it might help:

Independent Variable

An independent variable is one that influences the dependent variable in either a positive or

negative way. That is, when the independent variable is present, the dependent variable, there is an

increase or decrease in the dependent variable also. In other words, the variance in the dependent

variable is accounted for by the independent variable. To establish causal relationships, the

independent variable is manipulated.

Dependent Variable

The dependent variable is the variable of primary interest to the researcher. The researcher鈥檚 goal is

to understand and describe the depend variable, or to explain its variability, or predict it. In other

words, it is the main variable that lends itself for investigation as a viable factor. Through the

analysis of the dependent variable (i.e., finding what variables influence it), it is possible to find

answers or solutions to the problem. For this purpose, the researcher will be interested in

quantifying and measuring the dependent variable, as well as the other variables that influence this

variable.

Btw, i'm a shy person Loll, but i don't know what causes my shynessPsychology Question? What Is The Dependent and Independent Variable ?
Your proposal is very vague. The only two variables are "Shy People" and "Belief about shyness."

You are doing an experiment, so there isn't necessarily an independent and dependent variable. To assert one would be forcing it.

Yours is really what they call "qualitative research". It would consist first of (1) personality tests to determine participants who are shy and (2) a guided, open questionairre that would acquire information about their beliefs. (2) might be better as an interview. But these shy people are shy, after all.Psychology Question? What Is The Dependent and Independent Variable ?
Independant Variable: Causes of shyness

Dependant Variable: Shy people

Shy people are the dependent variable because not all possible causes for shyness will cause people to be shy.

As for how to assess the dependent variable, you would need to create a test to accurately measure the level of shyness a person experiences in certain situations. My advice would be to survey self proclaimed shy people and ask they believe makes them shy. Then create another survey with the answers from survey one, where the new subjects would have to rate 1-10 (or similar) each response given from survey one.

Good luck
