What does independent variable, dependent variable, and control variable mean (in biology)?

well i just need the definition of independent variable, dependent variable and control variable for biology. and experiment :D

thanks!!!What does independent variable, dependent variable, and control variable mean (in biology)?
These mean pretty much the same thing in every science. The independent variable is what the experimenter is able to change/manipulate. If the experimenter intentionally changes it at the start of the experiment, that's your independent variable (IV).

The dependent variable is what the experimenter is looking for. This is changed BY the IV and is measured at the end of an experiment.

I'm a psychologist, not a biologist, so we don't usually use the term control variable. But what is universal is that anything that is NOT the IV or DV must be controlled as much as possible (and in this context "control" means kept the same). So a control variable is anything NOT the IV that you want to keep as similar as possible while your experiment is run. The reason you want to do this is that in a pure experiment where ONLY the IV changes, you can certainly know any changes in DV occurred due to the IV change (which you, clever experimenter, changed yourself). But if you had UNcontrolled variables, then how do you know changes in the DV weren't due to those variables, not your perfectly manipulated IV? Your time is wasted, or more research must be done, because that possibility exists.
