Independent variable is something I change...so in other words it's the variable in the experiment that is being manipulated.
Dependent variable is something that depends on the independent variable that I am changing. Dependent variable changes because of the Independent variable.
Another way of looking at it is that Independent variable is the cause and Dependent variable is the effect.

The indepandant variable is what you will change in the experiment.
The dependant variable is what is changed BY the experiment.
So we're going to test the effect of a flame on water. We're going to see what happens to the temperature of the water if we apply the flame for 1min, 5mins, and 10mins
We're changing the length of time we apply the flame for so=INDEPENDANT VARIABLE
The temperature of the water will differ "depending" on what we're doing so=DEPENDANT VARIABLE
