In a design experiment, how do you know what is the independent variable and what is the dependent variable?

Testing which flower grows faster using water for the controlled variable and by using fertilizer with different amount of sun exposure. Each day record the length of each flower cup.In a design experiment, how do you know what is the independent variable and what is the dependent variable?
The independent variables are the ones you control, in this case, amount of water, amount of fertilizer, and amount of sun exposure. The dependent variable is the one you measure, in this case, the growth of the flower. In a design experiment, how do you know what is the independent variable and what is the dependent variable?
Independent is what the experimenter changes in the different trials

Dependent is what the experimenter measures in the different trialsIn a design experiment, how do you know what is the independent variable and what is the dependent variable?
The independent variable is the one that is changed, which would be the growth of the flower.

The dependent variable(s) would be the ones that stay the same, which would be the amount of sunlight...

Hope this helps. :)
