What is the independent variable, the dependent variable and the controlled variable?

My mother always told me that the green tea is bad for your teeth. I attempted to prove her wrong by creating a controlled experiment. In it, I decided to get two people who volunteered as test subjects; person A was given a schedule where he would drink 3 green tea cups a day, person B was given a schedule where he would drink 3 cups of water every day. The result was that person A had his teeth darkened, person B's teeth remained the same color. What is the independent variable, the dependent variable and the controlled variable?
independent variable: green tea vs. water

dependent: teeth color

controlled: amount of liquid and how long...What is the independent variable, the dependent variable and the controlled variable?
Good expirement.

IV: Drink (Water, Green Tea)

DV: Color of Teeth

CV: The person same person (it doesnt apply to this one though), amount of liquid, time (how long you ran the expirement), there can be a lot.

International Relations ? - An example of a hypothesis in which you can specify the independent variable.....?

The full question(s) is:

Please list two forms which hypothesis make take.

Which are: x causes y

x is correlated with y.

Please give one example of a hypothesis in which you clearly specify which is (are) the independent variable(s) and which is the dependent variable.

I don't know how to answer that question, and what to use as an example. Please help! Remember this is international relations.International Relations ? - An example of a hypothesis in which you can specify the independent variable.....?

What is a independent variable and independent variable?

When testin a airsickness pill, what would be my dependent and independent variables? And how would I measure. What is a independent variable and independent variable?
the dose or time is independant %26amp; the reaction is independant

measure by....asking?? sickness isnt really something you measureWhat is a independent variable and independent variable?
Independent variable is the pill, dependent variable is outcome of taking pill. The way you should measure this is have an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group gets the pill before flying or whatever, and the control group doesn't. Record the outcome. However, you should try to use people for the experiment that you know get airsick. If not, you could possibly get a false positve or negative. What is a independent variable and independent variable?
The dependent variable is the condition of airsickness observed. The independent variables are the conditions you impose on the experiment, such as the pills or placebos you give to the people you are experimenting with. You measure the results of giving the pill to some people against the results of giving a placebo to others. That will determine whether the pill is effective.

What would the independent variable, dependent variable, and constant be for my science fair project?

My science fair project question is whether weather affects the growth of crystals.

I have the chemical powder, two rocks, two containers, and a mixing stick.

I'm like mentally challenged on finding all of the variables and costants.

Please help!

Thank you SO SO much! What would the independent variable, dependent variable, and constant be for my science fair project?
The independent variable is the conditions the crystals are growing in. It is called this because it does not depend on anything for it's value. You should have only one independent variable (you should only change one thing). The dependent variable is how the crystals turn out or how fast they grow. this is because it depends on the conditions it grows in. The constants would be everything you don't change which would be, the ingredients, the container. This is because they stay constant, they don't change. What would the independent variable, dependent variable, and constant be for my science fair project?
Crystal grown is the dependent variable

The two rocks are the "subjects"

The chemical powder and weather are the independent variables (the rocks presumably get exposed to the powder or the weather..)

What is the independent variable, dependent variable and type of study?

A pharmacologist is testing whether a new anti-anxiety medication, Moodcor, will cause people to gain weight. To test this, she gives 100 people moodcor for one month and 100 people a placebo drug (sugar pill). At the end of the month, she monitors any weight gain. What is the independent variable, dependent variable and type of study?
Independent Variable: The type of medication/pill.

Dependant Variable: Weight change.

Type of Study: No idea.

  • How does the independent variable affect the dependent variable?

Im doing a science fair project, but i dont understand what this means. How does the independent variable affect the dependent variable?
It's simple really. The dependent variable 'depends' on the value the independent variable takes for its value.

    Say you have: y = 3x - 2

This is the equation for a straight line right? Well, 'y' is the dep. variable, and 'x' is the indep. variable. So 'x' takes on any value you wish to give it. So if I assign a value of one (1) to x then y HAS to be 3*1 - 2 = 1.

So y = 1 ONLY when x has been given its value.

    Understand?

    Think of it like this:

When you go to a restaurant, you can ONLY get what the restaurant offers on its menu. You can't go to a hot dog joint and say "Hey....gimme a fillet mignon!".......right? Your meal DEPENDS on the menu.....your meal is 'dependent' upon the offerings of that restaurant...and the offerings of the restaurant are like the independent variable.

Does that help????How does the independent variable affect the dependent variable?
    y depends onx

Independent and dependent variable question for biology?

A botanist is curious to know if a carnivorous plant grows better with a diet of live flies or dead flies. He measures the height of the plants at the start and end of the experiment.

    Dependent variable:

    Control:

Constants:Independent and dependent variable question for biology?
The independant variable is what you are looking for or what you dont have any control over. In this case its height.

The dependant variable is what you know or have control over, in this case, time.

The control is going to be what you are NOT testing for. In this case i think you can pick either one. Id pick the live flies as a control for dead flies as its closer to what happens in nature.

There really isnt a constant in this experiment but i guess you could say starting heightIndependent and dependent variable question for biology?
The independ. variable is actually defined as the treatment or condition under study. Therefore, in this case, it would be dead or alive flies. The depend. variable is the event or condition that is measured or observed %26amp; dependent on the independent variable. In this case, height.

Wish one is the dependent or independent variable?

For example if I'm doing an experiment of drinking and i give a track team students 2 ounces of Vodka ? what would be my dependent or independent variable?Wish one is the dependent or independent variable?
There are several possibilities depending on how you design the experiment.

The independent variable might be how much time has passed since the participants drank the vodka (or water, if you have a control group for comparison).

The dependent variable is what you are watching change over time, such as alertness, coordination or blood-alcohol-content.Wish one is the dependent or independent variable?
Well it really depends on what you're trying to find out. The independent variable is what you manipulate to change the dependent variable. So, say, you give one group of your track students 2 ounces of vodka (experimental group) and you didn't give the others any (control group), %26lt;-those would be the independent variables. The outcome- such a performace, or really whatever you want to make it, would be the dependent variable. Then you can perform an independent samples T-Test to see if your results are significantly diffrent.Wish one is the dependent or independent variable?
You have only listed one variable. The amount of vodka. A better example would be:

Giving the track students different amounts of vodka. Group A gets no vodka (they get water instead but are told its vodka. Group B is given two shots of vodka, and Group C is given 6 shots of vodka. The manipulated variable is often seen as the independent variable, in this case it is the amount of vodka.

You then would measure a second variable like how long it takes them to run around the track. In this case the track time would be the dependent variable.

Then just isolate dx/dy. Im not gonna do all that for you it will take too long to type haha. Basically just take the derivative of everything with respect to y instead of x.Regard y as the independent variable and x as the dependent variable and use implicit differentiation?

Thanks :)What are the definitons of Independent, dependent variables, variable, and control?
An independent variable is one which you control. The dependent variable is the effect. For example, I increase the temperature in the room from 70 degrees to 80 degrees by turning the thermostat up. The temperature is the independent variable, because I control it.

I have a cup of ice. I put it in the room with the temperature set at 80 degrees. The dependent variable is the speed at which the ice melts. This is the dependent variable.

The control is used for comparison. For example, I have 2 identical cups of ice. The cups are the same size, the amount of water in the cup is the same when I put them in the freezer. I take 1 cup of ice and put it in a room where the temperature is 70 degrees. This is the control. I take the other cup into an identical room which is at 70 degrees, and I turn the thermostat up to 80 degrees. The second room is changed. It is the experimental room. The first room is the control. the thermostat stays at 70 degrees.

Which is the independent or dependent variable?

You're in a corn maze and as you move along you stumble upon u-turns. As you continue in the maze you encounter more u-turns and time is wasting.

I want to know which one is the dependent and independent variable.

From these perspectives I came upon:

    - Time affects the U-Turns

    - U-Turns affect the Time

I think it's the latter--that the the u-turns respectively affects the time, but the longer you are in the maze (time), the more likely you are to make u-turns.

I'm confused. Help.Which is the independent or dependent variable?
You first need to understand the definition of "independent" and "dependent" variables.

The independent variable (IV) is what u fixed in ur experiment or problem.

The dependent variable (DV) is what u measure or record as u do ur experiment or solve ur problem.

In ur given situation, if u want to know how long it takes to pass through 6 U-turns,then the no of U turns is the IV and the time is DV.

However, if you want to know how many U turns u encounter if u are to walk in the maze for 20min, then the 20min is the IV and the no of U turns is the DV.
time would depend on the number of uturnsWhich is the independent or dependent variable?
    1) dependent variable: time taken/wasted because time is dependent upon the number of U-turns encountered (e.g. more U-turns encountered, more time taken and less U-turns encountered, less time taken)

independent variable: number of U-turns encountered because the number of U-turns is not dependent upon time (e.g. as time passes, the number of U-turns is not affected if you remain stationary)Which is the independent or dependent variable?
You're right, it is the latter. For example you could spend tons of time in the maze without having to make a single uturn. You could jut sit there not moving forever. However to make even one uturn, you spend some time. You see?
Depends on what you are measuring. If you are measuring (if you were trying to know) how long it would take to get through the maze, you would find that the time until completion varied as the number of U-turns encountered. This would be the typical way of looking at the experiment. That is, one normally would be looking at how time spent in the maze is a function of the number of uturns that can be encountered. Time spent has a pretty direct relationship to the number of uturns.

However, if you were concerned with how many uturns you encountered, you would find that the number of turns would be dependant on the time spent in the maze, all other things being equal. However, time spent can vary according to another of different factors as well, so the number of uturns encountered may be only weakly affected by the time spent.

Multivariate equations tend to have dependance according to how the equation (the relationship) is set up. All values depend on each other until you choose to control one of them.

The independant variable is the one YOU choose to change. You then see how that change of your choosing alters the result (the dependant variable).

In your example, one normally considers the number of turns in the maze as the independant variable - the maze is constructed by you (or by someone) with a number of u-turns, perhaps even different possible solution paths with different numbers of uturns. The time it takes to completion is a function of the number of turns that have been placed on the chosen path.

On the other hand, you could look at it by deciding to measure the number of turns encountered after given periods of time in the maze, say 30 seconds, one minute, two minutes, etc. In this case, YOU are choosing the time (the independant variable), and the number of uturns that are encountered (the dependant variable) will depend on the amount of time you have chosen.

So it depends on what you want to measure.

What is my independent & dependent variable?

the substances are the dependent variables cause they depend on the freezer to freeze them so they change accordingly to the freezer. What is my independent %26amp; dependent variable?
Independent is the one you manipulate or vary. Therefore, it is temperature of water.

Dependent is the one you measure. That, in this case, is time to freezing.

What is the independent variable in Asch's power of conformity experiment?

Is it the answers that the actors are giving? I know the dependent variable is whether or not the individual conforms. What is the independent variable in Asch's power of conformity experiment?
The independent variable (the thing that Asch controlled) was the number of actors who gave a wrong answer. In some cases Asch had all the actors give a wrong answer, but in other conditions he had one actor give a correct answer to see how many people would be needed to get the real subject to go against the others (who were giving wrong answers) and give the right answer. So "number of actors providing the wrong answer" is the independent variable.

I'm not sure what the indpendent variable is and what teh control measure is? please help! What is the independent variable if you are investigating human body responses to sudden heat loss.?
The independent variable is the factor you, as the experimenter, change or regulate. Here you are exposing a body to a sudden drop in temperature from temp X to temp Z. The temperature change is the independent variable and the body's response is the dependent variable. You control other things like air speed so you know the body is being cooled only by the water bath and not influenced by other factors.

A control would be a warm water bath to show the sudden immersion in water did not bring about the response.

Another control would be with a test subject going through the motions in the same room temperature but not exposed to the water bath to show that no other factor in the room triggered the physiological response.

What would be the independent variable and dependent variable for the diameter and area?

its a little confusing sorry..which one would be the independent and which one would be the dependent? What would be the independent variable and dependent variable for the diameter and area?
    Area depends on the diameter.

Is there any diference between a variable and an independent variable and the dependent varaiable?

or is it just the same, coz i heard that a variable can mean the thing you change in an experiment, but a dependent variable is the one you measure? Is there any diference between a variable and an independent variable and the dependent varaiable?
Variable means the things or factors that could change in an experiment.

Independent variable means things that when you change, the dependent variable will change.

    For example,

in a photosynthesis experiment to find out how light intensity affects the rate of photosynthesis, independent variable is light intensity, the one you can change, and the rate of photosynthesis by measuring the amount of oxygen produced in say 5 minutes would be the dependent variable. Is there any diference between a variable and an independent variable and the dependent varaiable?
    Consider the expression:

    x = y

Both x and y are variables.

y is an independent variable because it has no relationship to anything else and can have virtually any value.

x on the other hand is a dependent variable because it depends on the value given to y.

  • Psychology Question? What Is The Dependent and Independent Variable ?

I'm doing a Research Proposal. My Proposal is " What Do Shy People Believe Caused Their Shyness ". The actual cause is NOT what the people BELIEVE caused their shyness.

I Am VERY confused. Can someone please just help me out ?

What Is the independent variable(s) and conditions

What is the dependent variable(s) and how it will be assessed ?Psychology Question? What Is The Dependent and Independent Variable ?
I don't know, i'm only 14 hehe, but i like psychology and i downloaded this once, i found these explanations of dependent and independent variables so it might help:

    Independent Variable

An independent variable is one that influences the dependent variable in either a positive or

negative way. That is, when the independent variable is present, the dependent variable, there is an

increase or decrease in the dependent variable also. In other words, the variance in the dependent

variable is accounted for by the independent variable. To establish causal relationships, the

    independent variable is manipulated.

    Dependent Variable

The dependent variable is the variable of primary interest to the researcher. The researcher鈥檚 goal is

to understand and describe the depend variable, or to explain its variability, or predict it. In other

words, it is the main variable that lends itself for investigation as a viable factor. Through the

analysis of the dependent variable (i.e., finding what variables influence it), it is possible to find

answers or solutions to the problem. For this purpose, the researcher will be interested in

quantifying and measuring the dependent variable, as well as the other variables that influence this

    variable.

Btw, i'm a shy person Loll, but i don't know what causes my shynessPsychology Question? What Is The Dependent and Independent Variable ?
Your proposal is very vague. The only two variables are "Shy People" and "Belief about shyness."

You are doing an experiment, so there isn't necessarily an independent and dependent variable. To assert one would be forcing it.

Yours is really what they call "qualitative research". It would consist first of (1) personality tests to determine participants who are shy and (2) a guided, open questionairre that would acquire information about their beliefs. (2) might be better as an interview. But these shy people are shy, after all.Psychology Question? What Is The Dependent and Independent Variable ?
    Independant Variable: Causes of shyness

    Dependant Variable: Shy people

Shy people are the dependent variable because not all possible causes for shyness will cause people to be shy.

As for how to assess the dependent variable, you would need to create a test to accurately measure the level of shyness a person experiences in certain situations. My advice would be to survey self proclaimed shy people and ask they believe makes them shy. Then create another survey with the answers from survey one, where the new subjects would have to rate 1-10 (or similar) each response given from survey one.

Can someone help me identify the independent and dependent variable in this experiment?

This is the experiment. Im trying to find out if eating a good breakfast will improve test scores. So im going to give 1 group of 10 a good breakfast and one group of 10 NO breakfast. Then im going to make them take a test.

SOOO whats the independent/dependent variable in this experiment.?Can someone help me identify the independent and dependent variable in this experiment?
    independent is eating breakfast

    dependent is the test scores

because the test scores are dependent on the good breakfast the person eatsCan someone help me identify the independent and dependent variable in this experiment?
Eating breakfast vs Not eating breakfast is the independent variables because this is what you are changing on purpose to see how it effects the results

Test scores are the dependent variable because this is the results and is measurable. Can someone help me identify the independent and dependent variable in this experiment?
    Independent: test scores

    Dependent: breakfast they eat

What's the independent variable for a survey experiment?

I'm doing a summary on an experiment and i have to put the independent variable. The experiment is on sleep paralysis in adolescents. high school students were given surveys with multiple questions. they are all seniors at private schools. the questionnaire is trying to figure out if there is a correlation between lifestyle factors and sleep disorders, specifically night mares and sleep paralysis. What's the independent variable for a survey experiment?
The dependent variable would be the answers that they gave you, where as the independent variable would be such things as the people asked and other variables that must be kept constant.

According to Google, it's somewhat of a gray area, but I'd be happy to do more research if you want to message me. I spent about 10 minutes looking around but it's not an easy answer. Again, feel free to message me and I hope you are successful in what you are looking for.

I dont know which is the dependent variable, independent variable, or control in this experiment?

my hypothesis is can the amount of alcohol effect the way these mouth washes work?(listerine, scope, crest) and the amount of alcohol in each mouth wash. what is the dependent variable which is the independent variable and which is the control?

AND PLEASE HURRY I HAVE TO WRITE AN ESSAY DUE TOMORROW!!!PLZ HURRY;0I dont know which is the dependent variable, independent variable, or control in this experiment?
Another name for the independent variable is the Manipulated Variable - that is the variable the scientists are changing on purpose - in this case it would be the amount of alcohol contained in the different types of mouthwash.

Another name for the dependent variable is the Measured Variable - in this case the way the mouth washes "work." Here is where I think you have a flaw in your design - how can you MEASURE the way mouthwash works? You need to consider this point carefully.

Finally, the controlled variables are all of the conditions you would keep the same in each trial - for example the amount of mouthwash used for each test, and the amount of time you wait for each mouthwash to "work" (whatever that means).

Good luck!I dont know which is the dependent variable, independent variable, or control in this experiment?
the independent varible is the varible that is changed (the mouth washes) and the dependent is the varible thats mesured (the amount of alcohol) the control would be a mouthwashing with just water...no variability or change..nothing to measure...hence its a control

Can i draw a graph if the independent variable is a fan setting?

I have the fan setting on the independant variable and the level of transparation (cm) on the dependant variable. What type of graph could i draw, it's not line, i tried..Can i draw a graph if the independent variable is a fan setting?
could it be a correlational study rather than experimental? in which case you would do a scattergram

I don't think fan setting is actually an IV or the trans a DV I suspect you have 2 co-variables

In which case you will only be able to conclude that a correlation occurs between the two variable and will not be able to make claims based on cause and effect as there may be other variable uncontrolled for which could be the cause. Can i draw a graph if the independent variable is a fan setting?
what is fan setting by the way ??

An independent variable a variable that is changed on purpose for the experiment.

A dependent variable is a variable that is caused by another variable [the independent variable].

    4x - (x - 3) = 15

Thanks!!What is the Independent and Dependent Variable?
If marble collection varies with time - the marble collection is dependent on time. Therefore, the marble collection is the dependent variable. As time is not going to be affected by the size of the marble collection - time is the independent variable.

What is the definition of an independent variable?

I just don't understand what it means? Everyone keeps telling me that it's the variable that changes but what does THAT mean? Can you please help me understand the concept in a clear way? I have to take a test tomorrow and I need help! What is the definition of an independent variable?
independent variable is the variable that the RESEARCHER changes on purpose to see if it makes a difference on the outcome.

For example, lets say you, the researcher, want to know how many daily calories can you eat and still lose 2 lbs a week. So, you would need to try several different calories levels. You test eating 1200 calories for one week, 1600 calories for another, and 2000 calories for another week. You independent variable would be: amount of calories (because this is what you changed on purpose to see if it makes a difference on the outcome - the outcome in this case would be number of pounds you lost each week)What is the definition of an independent variable?
Basically the independent variable really is the thing that you change. For example, if you decided to make an experiment where you wanted to see if boys were better at Maths than girls. (Not saying they are, but just an example.) You could give both of them a test in Maths and record their marks. The independent variable is basically the gender. Because that's the only thing you've changed to actually have a point in doing the experiment. Hope this helped :)

Does a science project only has to have one independent variable?

I'm doing a science project where I experiment if the temperature affects how long it will take for an Alka-Seltzer tablet to melt.

Isn't the water and the Alka-Seltzer tablet both independent variables because the temperature of the water changes and the Alka-Seltzer tablet dissolves into nothing.

PLZ answer my project is due the 25th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Does a science project only has to have one independent variable?
The independent variable is the temperature of the water. That is the variable you control and change.

The dependent variable is how long it takes the tablet to dissolve. Assuming all the other variables are unchanged (amount of water, size of tablet, shape of container for water, etc.), how long it takes to dissolve will depend on the temperature of the water.Does a science project only has to have one independent variable?
no, there is only one independent variable, the temperature. the independent variable is the one you manipulate; you actively manipulate the temperature of the water. The dissolution of the tablet is a consequence of this manipuation and the time it takes is the dependent variable.

Can you help me determine the Independent and Dependent variable?

Basically the research question is: does the socio-economic backgrounds of football players vs. golf players affect their overall college experience?

I think the Independent Variable is the sport played (either football or golf) and the Dependent Variable is their socio-economic status/ overall college experience

Am I wrong..?Can you help me determine the Independent and Dependent variable?
This is a tricky one. Your dependent variable would most likely be "socioeconomic standing of sports players." You would then have to divide this into categories on your x-axis. You would most likely have to take 2 or 3 different socioeconomic standing and the sport for each bar of the graph (i.e. rich golf players, rich football players, poor golf players, poor football players or whatever). Then your independent variable, or y-axis would be the college experience depending on both of those factors.

This is because the independent variable is dependent on the dependent variable. You are "selecting" the people in your study based on the dependent variable. The independent variable is what you find out because of the dependent variable.
No, I think you're correct. ;)Can you help me determine the Independent and Dependent variable?
I think that a student's college experience is dependent on the socio-economic backgrounds of the students. Don't really see how the sport they play is relevant because people from all socio-economic backgrounds play football and golf (personally I like hockey and wouldn't be caught with a golf club anywhere near me.) So my point is who cares what sport they play ... unless you're referring to scholarships and stuff then I agree with what you suggested.

Otherwise I would make the socio-economic background of the students the independent variable and the overall college experience as the dependent variable ... but I'm not sure how that will be measured. Can you help me determine the Independent and Dependent variable?
The independent variable is the variable which is manipulated on an experiment to see its effect on the dependent variable. On your research question, it would be the the socio-economic backgrounds which would affect the college experiences. And i would like to believe this would be a comparative study between football and golf players, which also tries to determine how their respective sports would affect their overall college experience.

    Thus,

Independent Variable - socio-economic backgrounds and sport played

Dependent Variable - overall college experience

How do I Combine 5 independent variables that are directly correlated with 1 dependent variable?

I have five qualitative variables that are directly correlated with one dependent variable (i.e. when a FICO score is less than 500, write-offs occur 8.8% of the time) How do I combine these percentages to come up with a combined likelihood of write-off?How do I Combine 5 independent variables that are directly correlated with 1 dependent variable?
Sorry, you have it backwards. The dependent variable is correlated with the independent ones. That is, f(y) is some function of f(x1), f(x2,) f(x3), f(x4) and f(x5)

I do not know what the independent or dependent variable is ?

I am doing an experiment to see which direction (light or dark) an insect would move?

what is the dependent or independent variable here?

would the number of insects be the dependent

would light or dark conditions be the independent

thanksI do not know what the independent or dependent variable is ?
independent is ALWAYS what you manipulate i.e. light/dark

dependent is ALWAYS what you measure i.e. number or rate of insect responseI do not know what the independent or dependent variable is ?
the light or dark is independent and the insects are dependent. think about it this way, the light or dark is depented on (independent) the direction of the insects (Dependent).I do not know what the independent or dependent variable is ?
The dependent would be which direction the insect goes in (Light/Dark) and the independent would be the number of insects.

  • What is a control group, independent variable and a dependent variable?

I know that a variable is something that can be changed but I dont understand. If you could answer my question and also give a brief example that would be great. Thanks! What is a control group, independent variable and a dependent variable?
This is usually an easy one to understand-

The more you water plants, the more they grow.

In this example, the independent variable would be water on the plants, because that is what you know you are going to be changing. The dependent variable will be plant growth, because it depends on how much water you give the plants. The control would be plants that aren't being watered, because control is what you compare the results to. If you just watered the plants, you wouldn't know if it has an affect unless you have something to compare it to, such as plants that have no water.

I need to figure out the dependent and independent variable of my data set.Whats a independent variable and an dependent variable? explain?
thetyman is a weird looking guy. But he has a point
The words "dependent" and "independent" distinguish between what you are given and what you are trying to find with what you are given-----for example

speed = distance / elapsed time

here speed is the dependent variable because in THIS equation it is what you are trying to determine and it "depends" upon the independent variables, distance and elapsed time

However if you rearrange this equation and solve for distance

distance = speed X elapsed time

Now distance is the "dependent" variable and now speed and elapsed time are the "independents"...

Make sense?Whats a independent variable and an dependent variable? explain?
    Example y = 2 x

The value of y "depends" on the value you give to x.

    if x =1, y=2; if x=2, y=4; etc

x is "independent", because it is the one you assign different values to.

Now if the equation would be x = 2 y, then x would be the dependent one.Whats a independent variable and an dependent variable? explain?
when two variables are related to each other by an equation say 3x -- 4y = 12 then

    in y = (3/4)x -- 4, y is dependent variable and x is independent variable.

    in x = (4/3)y + 4, x is dependent variable and y is independent variable.
    is it math or science?

What is a dependent variable and a independent variable?

How can manipulate the independent variable? What is a dependent variable and a independent variable?
A dependent variable is when 2 thing move hand in hand such as air density and temperature then the temperature goes down air pressure goes up.

An independent variable would be something like size of a container the air is in the metal it is made, it openings an their size anything that if you are to vary it does not vary another variable and can me manipulated in limitless way depending o what your terms are.

Say I have a large tank filled with X gas and at 100 degrees Fahrenheit it has a PSI of 30 but at 50 degrees Fahrenheit it has a PSI of 32. Both the temperature of the air and it's PSI are dependent on one another and are thus dependent variables

an independenVariableble could be it what it contains other than gas if those stats are the same if it has 0 or 500 ball barrings in it the the number of ball barring is an independent variable in that effects no other variable. What is a dependent variable and a independent variable?

I wrote up the whole lab already if you need to see that, just message me. :) I want to make sure I get this right though before I turn it in. Thanks!Which is the dependent/independent variable? Which is the control/experimental group?
Your independent variables are anything that you were able to control: ie the temperature, the type of lifesaver, the number of times you stirred. Your dependent variables will be the results of your experimentation, such as how dissolved each lifesaver was. You have no control group/experimental group in this situation because you don't know the outcome for either type of lifesaver before you perform the experiment.

z is the independent variable. The reason for this is becuase you have n(z) which translates of n as a function of z. Therefore, the value of n depends on the function of z.

How to draw a graph when the dependent variable is length of leaf and independent variable light and shade?

the dependent variable is the length of the leaf

help i need if for my A- level ISA which is tomorrow

thanksHow to draw a graph when the dependent variable is length of leaf and independent variable light and shade?
The independent variable is always on the X axis (horizontal axis) and the dependent variable is always on the Y axis (vertical axis).

How did you measure/change the amount of light/shade? Was it something definite where you could give a percentage of available light that the plant received? If so, find the range of values and decide how many units each "box" of the graph would represent - 1? 2? 5? 10? - so that all fit on a page of graph paper without leaving too much blank space. If you just used a value such as "low", "medium", and "high", use those labels at the bottom.

I imagine you measured the actual lengths of the leaves, so these would be the units on the Y axis. Again, you don't have to mark every value, unless there wasn't much difference between the leaves. If there was, you may only want to show every 2, 5, or 10 units so all fit on the page without leaving a lot of blank space.

If you were using actual measurements or percentages for the light/shade, you could show your data with either a line or bar graph, but if you used low-high values, it would be better as a bar graph.

Graph paper is an easy way to make your graph if you're not used to using a spreadheet program (such as Microsoft Excel) to make one.

a doctor has patients run on a treadmill for 0,10, and 20 minutes and then measures their self reported mood.

    the independent variable is:

    A. the self reported mood

    B. running for 0,10,20 minutes

    C. somatic

    D. not known based on given info

It's B. The independent variable is the factor that the doctor controls. The dependent variable would be the reported mood, the outcome of the experiment.

What is the Independent and Dependent Variable in this Study? Please Help.?

In a recent study for The Archives of Internal Medicine, scientists followed 153 men and women for two weeks, keeping track of their quality and duration of sleep. Then, during a five-day period, they quarantined the subjects and exposed them to cold viruses. Those who slept an average of fewer than seven hours a night, it turned out, were three times as likely to get sick as those who averaged at least eight hours.

I'm kinda lost at what independent variable and dependent variable means? What is the Independent and Dependent Variable in this Study? Please Help.?
independent variable = it is what the researchers manipulate.

dependent variable = results that occurred.

  • Which is the dependent and which is the independent variable?

The objective of the study was to determine the effect of indoor wall climbing on self-efficacy and self-perceptions of children with special needs. What are the independent and dependent variables of this study?Which is the dependent and which is the independent variable?
The independent variable is the level of activity that the children are subjected to, whether you classify it as none, little, much or go into even more detail than that. The dependent variable, presuming you find a correlation, would be the change in attitudes or behaviours derived from it, i.e. the self efficacy and perceptions you talk about.

Although it seems to me that this is a study that is unlikely to be able to be adequatley simplified to fit into and old fashioned X = Y+1 situation.

I was given a table of statistics entitled "Preterm Birth Rates for the 4 Regions in the US for all Ages" it then goes on to list the exact birth rate in each state in the given region and then the region as a whole.

So which is the dependent and which is the independent variable???Which is the dependent and which is the independent variable in this example?
    Birth rate is dependent variable.
    Age is independent variable.
State is independent variable.Which is the dependent and which is the independent variable in this example?
Not understanding exactly what the example is.

I think regions = independent because it is controlled for (I assume).

and preterm birth rates = dependent variable because it is what changes with respect to region.

But I don't have enough info to understand fully what your question is asking.Which is the dependent and which is the independent variable in this example?
does the birth rate depend on the state? or does the state depend on the birthrate?

Is gender my independent variable or dependent variable?

I have a survey, which is to test the hypothesis that females depend on the internet more then males. So I have the first question what is your gender, then the rest of the questions gauge their dependence on the internet.

Would gender be an independent or dependent variable? Is gender my independent variable or dependent variable?
Gender would be an independent variable. An independent variable in this case is one that does not change. To say that gender is dependent is saying that a person's gender changes according to how much they depend on the internet. Or it could mean that if a person relies on the internet, that person must be female. I'm sure you see the absurdity of these claims. Gender is independent since it does not change no matter what your internet habits are.Is gender my independent variable or dependent variable?

What is my independent variable & dependent variable?

I am doing a science fair project my questions is "which beach works best" I bought 2 bleaches a dollar store brand one %26amp; Clorox. I bought 2 shirts %26amp; have equally gotten them dirty by placing stains of the same substance on both in the same area. Now I just need to figure our what it my independent variable, dependent variable and my controlled variables. HELP PLEASE!What is my independent variable %26amp; dependent variable?
The independant is the one you change (in this case the bleach)

The dependant is the one that changes as a result of the independant and is the one you measure (in this case how much they were cleaned)

the control variable is the variable that was kept constant (in this case how dirty you made the shirts)What is my independent variable %26amp; dependent variable?
the independant variable is the part that does not change whether or not other factors change. the dependant variable is the factor that changes according to change in other factors

so the independant variables would be your type of shirt, and how dirty the shirt is as well as the amount of bleach used. they need to be the same for both tests so that results are not biased

the dependant variable would be how clean the shirts got from each testWhat is my independent variable %26amp; dependent variable?
The 2 bleaches are the independent variables you are studying. They are independent of the controlled conditions.

The outcome or results are the dependent variables because they depend on the bleach.

The controls are the water you use, the cloth being bleached, and the stain itself. These must be controlled or kept the same so you can compare what the bleaches each do.

Independent variable is a variable that you manipulate (brand type)

Dependent variable is a variable that you are measuring.

Control variable - I think that's a variable you that are trying to keep constant/control somehow, so that it doesn't affect the results.

What did you keep constant (shirt type?)

    dep.-amount/number of stains removed

    ind-amount poured (bleach)

im not sure since i dont know what exactly ur looking for. remeber that dependant variable varies directly to independant. meaning that u can change the independent, but the only why u can change the dependent is by changing the independent.

Why independent variable is plotted along x-axis?

Its a tradition or something like that to plot independent variable along x-axis, and dependent variable along y-axis? Whats the reason behind this? Or is it just a convention?

I know the question sounds lame, but still asking. Why independent variable is plotted along x-axis?
No reason. But it's got to be one axis or the other. There are some examples where it's been done the other way, but that's just confusing because everyone takes it for granted that the x-axis is the independent variable.

Alright, I'm doing my project on how detergents affect plant growth.

Would you please give me the Manipulated/Independent variable and Responding/dependant variable: since I do not understand the meaning of them? dependant variable: how much the plant grows

independant variable: the type of detergentHomeworkHelp What is the manipulated/independent variable?
The manipulated variable is what you change on purpose, which would be the amount of detergent in this case.

The responding variable is the measurement of change based on the manipulated variable. It depends what you want to use, maybe plant height (cm) or time it takes to sprout (days, hours), etc.

For the experiment, I would test a cup with just water, and a cup with water and detergent. Make sure you only change one thing!!! If you put water in one, you have to put it in the other. Put them in the same place at the same time so they get equal light, etc.

    Hope this helps!!!

Is it possible for a science experiment to not have a independent variable?

so were doing and experiment on the specific heat capacity of pewter is it possible that it doesn't have a independent variableIs it possible for a science experiment to not have a independent variable?
Yes it is possible. When a science is young and has no actual theories, simple observation is the only way to experiment. For example the SETI project is in the observational stage, where experiments consist mainly of data collection and analysis. There can be no independent variable until we determine that a dependent variable even exists.

    See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_for_鈥?/a>

Another example is string theory (in physics) where they have not yet discovered ways of confirming the theory: no test = no independent variables.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/String_theo鈥?/a>Is it possible for a science experiment to not have a independent variable?
If it did not have an independent variable it would not be a valid (useful) experiment.

The point of the the independent variable is that you control this variable and see how it affects another variable (the dependent variable)

In the process you keep as many as possible factors the same for each group (controlled variables) in order to isolate your intended experimental factors.

Please review your basic experiment setup notes :-)Is it possible for a science experiment to not have a independent variable?
no or it wont be any good

    dependent: child's behavior afterwords
control: children who are not given no rewards and no punishments
constant: children should be the same ageAre children better motivated by rewards or punishment? Independent variable, Dependent variable and constant?
Most the time kids are motivated by punishments.

The constant is the kid not wanting to do something (lets say chores) if you threaten to take away there fun games and or hurt them this would be the (dependent variable on what you would do) and the independent would be the result. Some kids are different and there motivated by money and or other stuff however these ones are the outliers

How do I find the change in a logged dependent variable for a one unit increase in an independent variable?

The independent variable is not logged.

    Here's the example

    ln(fees) = 0.52625(assets) + .....

where 0.52625 is beta, the coefficient

I want to derive the effect on fees. I'm pretty sure that the effect on fees is fees*e^(0.52625)for a one unit change in assets, but how can I go from the equation above to this result? How do I find the change in a logged dependent variable for a one unit increase in an independent variable?
    You have ln(y(x)) = a + bx. The notation "y(x)" means "y evaluated at x" not y times x.

So for a unit change in x, that is, from x to x+1 we get

    ln(y(x+1)) = a + b(x+1)

    ln(y(x)) = a + bx

    ln(y(x+1)) - ln(y(x)) = b

    y(x+1)/y(x) = exp(b)

To conver to a % change per unit increase in x do the following:

    100*(y(x+1)/y(x) - 1) = 100*(exp(b) - 1)

Math Rules! How do I find the change in a logged dependent variable for a one unit increase in an independent variable?
    If ln(fees) = k*assets

    then:

    fees = e^(k*assets).

That is the definition of a base e logarithm, denoted by 'ln'.

If you have two lots f1 and f2 of fees withcorresponding assets a1 and a2, then:

    f1 = e^(k*a1)

    f2 = e^(k*a2)

    f2 / f1 = e^(k * (a2 - a1)).

The difficult thing is to develop a good measure of both concepts. Ideally, you would find out how other researchers have measured these concepts and try to use their measures (assuming there is some consensus about how to measure them). If you鈥檙e going to produce some contingency tables, you鈥檒l want to make sure that you have some good categories 鈥?perhaps a likert scale.

this is for a science far project and i am stumped right now i really need help so i can get this approved tomorrow so if you can figure out a independent variable for me i will greatly love you for that and no stupid answers please and my senses are all 5 of them seeing, hearing, feeling, touching, and smelling. so please please please help me.I need a independent variable for this hypothesis?
You don't have a hypothesis. All you have is a problem. This is the first step of the scientific method.

Now you have to research and get educated about this problem. From there you can now come up with a hypothesis. Example: If I blindfold a person, then we can expect his/her sense of (pick one) to be more acute then when he/she is unblindfolded. Now we can create an experiment to help prove this hypothesis. It is here that you will determine the independent variable. I think you mean the experimental variable or the thing you are testing? This would be whether the senses become more acute.

What is the independent variable of this research question?

In your question the likelihood of committing domestic violence *depends* on the group of individuals. So the likelihood of committing domestic violence is your dependant variable, and the group of individuals is your independent variable.

On an economic supply-demand curve, why is the independent variable on the y-axis and dependent on the x-axis?

On all other mathematical graphs, the independent variable (in the case of a supply-demand curve, this is "price") is plotted on the horizontal x-axis, and the dependent variable (on a supply-demand curve, this is "supply" and "demand") on the vertical y-axis. Other than "That's just the way it is", I'm hoping to find some reasoning behind this. Obviously, it can't be that economists don't understand basic algebra. On an economic supply-demand curve, why is the independent variable on the y-axis and dependent on the x-axis?
This is a good question. In the theories of supply and demand the quantities supplied and demanded are modeled as dependent variables. But in a supply and demand diagram, the supply and demand curves are the graphs of the inverses of these functions.

One way to think about things is to consider the equilibrium price of a good as a variable that depends on both quantity of the good supplied and the quantity of the good demanded.
haven't got a satisfactory answer yet

On an economic supply-demand curve, why is the independent variable on the y-axis and dependent on the x-axis?
Economists have not bothered to study chemistry as well. Actually ALL economic reactions where wealth changes from one form to another are similar to chemical reactions where matter changes from one form to another. All reactions of wealth are reversible. There is a law in chemistry for reversible chemical reactions. The Law is called Law of Mass Action. If you apply that law, in a reaction involving change of wealth from goods to money, price is the equilibrium constant and price is given by

K= Quantity of money/quantity of goods. If goods increase prices drop and if money increases prices rise. Remember that mere words supply and demand are not forms of wealth.

Regarding price, price can not be a variant because it consists of two forms of wealth i.e. goods and money.

It is my sincere request that economics be redefined as study of nature, properties, composition, laws and classification of wealth. On an economic supply-demand curve, why is the independent variable on the y-axis and dependent on the x-axis?
Your mistake is that you consider price the independent variable and quantity the dependent variable. I agree that at first it's a lot easier to conceptualize as "How many widgets would people buy if the price were X?" but in reality, the two are constantly pushing at each other. Instead, neither is really the independent variable because the question really could be "If I were buying X widgets, how much would I pay for them?"

You have wind, and rate of evaporation. These are the two variables. For the sake of the project, you should keep both situations the same, both inside with the same amount of light, same size pan, same amount of water, just have fan vs. no fan.

In each situation, you control the amount of wind. This is the independent variable. The rate of evaporation is the dependent variable, because it depends on the amount of wind. Can someone help me find the independent variable and dependent variable of my sciance project ?
The independent variable is the fan or wind. Its independent because the experiment does not DEPEND on this variable.

  • In this question what is the independent variable?

"females are more like to vote for female candidates than males"

Is the independent variable _sex_ or the _vote cast_?In this question what is the independent variable?
its the sex, you are measuring the number of votes cast, changing the sex that is votingIn this question what is the independent variable?
The independent variable is the 19th amendment. Prior to that, women were not allowed to vote, thus they were dependent on their men to vote responsibly.

Which is the dependent and independent variable?

I'm doing a paper on gender, income and education (it shows that even with higher education women tend to earn less then men). What would be dependent and independent variables be? Should one of the three be labeled as a control? Thanks!Which is the dependent and independent variable?
An independent variable is something that is NOT affected by anything else in the world. A good example is time. Time continues even if it's raining or even when you're sleeping.. it doesn't care about anything else.

Therefore, a dependent variable is something that IS affected by something else. Example: The amount of rain fall in an hour. The amount is dependent on the hour (time) because without the hour then no rain will fall. Sorry I'm not very good at explaining this.

So, for your paper - Income is dependent on gender (because you make more as a man than as a woman). Education, I think, is just a factor, is that what a control is? A woman with an education might make more money than a woman without an education but not as much as a man with/without an education.

Good Luck.Which is the dependent and independent variable?
The Independent variable is the one that YOU willingly change, so... in this case it would be.. gender AND education

The Dependent Variable is the one that you MEASURE soo..... income

None of them are a controlWhich is the dependent and independent variable?
an independent variable is something that you change

A dependent variable depends on the independent variable/the one the independent variable affects

So, the independent variable=gender %26amp; education

    dependent=income

this is because you are trying to see whether gender and education affect income

    there is no control variable

    hope this helps:)

In my science home work I have to know what a manipulated (independent) variable is, do you know?

What is dependent or independent variable in my project?

My project is weather or not age effects your sense of smell(and it in fact does) I asked six people in five different age groups to smell different things but I don't know what the difference between my independent and dependent variables r poses hop thnxWhat is dependent or independent variable in my project?
The independent variable is what you, the researcher, purposely changes in the experiment to see if it effects the results. In this case, you are purposely picking different ages.

The dependent is the measurable results. In this case, it's the sense of smell (you can measure it by having individuals rate on a scale from 1-10 how strongly they can smell the scent).
