In a sleeping time study among college students, what would be the independent variable(s)? Could it be gender or race, or is it something else?

IV is what you are manipulating. Gender is somewhat of a lame IV, but it works.
You could use a more creative IV such as Major(Psych, business, engineering, etc) or Grade(fresh/senior/graduate lvl)
