Is there any diference between a variable and an independent variable and the dependent varaiable?

or is it just the same, coz i heard that a variable can mean the thing you change in an experiment, but a dependent variable is the one you measure?Is there any diference between a variable and an independent variable and the dependent varaiable?
Variable means the things or factors that could change in an experiment.

Independent variable means things that when you change, the dependent variable will change.

For example,

in a photosynthesis experiment to find out how light intensity affects the rate of photosynthesis, independent variable is light intensity, the one you can change, and the rate of photosynthesis by measuring the amount of oxygen produced in say 5 minutes would be the dependent variable.Is there any diference between a variable and an independent variable and the dependent varaiable?
Consider the expression:

x = y

Both x and y are variables.

y is an independent variable because it has no relationship to anything else and can have virtually any value.

x on the other hand is a dependent variable because it depends on the value given to y.
