The independent variable is what you control. The type of cup AND the time limit are the independent variables. The out come due to what you control is the dependent. So the temp is the dependent variable.

First answer is wrong. The independent variables are the ones you are able to set (the cup type and the time). The dependent variables are outcomes of your experiment (temperature of the cup). If plotting on a graph, the independent variable (in your case cup type) would go on the x-axis and the dependent (outcome which "depends" on the independent variable, on the y-axis).
