What is the independent variable and what is the dependent variable?

Im doing a lab on measuring water density.

So I measure the volume in a graduated cylinder and measure the mass by weighing the beaker with water and then the beaker alone (subtract and get mass). What would the independent, and dependent variables be? And controls? What is the independent variable and what is the dependent variable?
Dependent variable is that whose value depends on some other quantity and independent variable is that whose value does not depend on other quantity. What is the independent variable and what is the dependent variable?
The measure that you're controlling is the independent variable, because it is independent of what you do in the experiment. You control it, it does not depend on the outcome of the experiment.

The volume of water sounds like it would be the independent variable here. Thus, the dependent variable would be the mass.

The control could be the calculated density of water, to see if your results are correct or not.
