What is the independent variable and dependent variable?

I am trying to understand the difference between the two while learning about Social Research. For example, if the hypothesis is:

Employees who are in a competitive work environment will more likely be motivated to perform by cash incentives than non-cash incentives.

What would be the independent and dependent variables be? I feel like I keep getting the reversed. Thanks! What is the independent variable and dependent variable?
work enviroment = independant

likelihood of performing by cash incentives = dependant

The independant variable is the one which is responsible for the bahaviour of the dependant variables value.

For example, snow turns yellow because you pee on it, you dont pee on it because its yellow.. Basic, Basic. The yellow-ness of the snow is dependant on you pee-ing on it lol..

What is the independent variable and dependent variable?
The independent variable is the employees motivation. The dependent is the cash and non cash incentives. The employees will have a level of motivation, whether they are offered incentives or not. Therefore, it is independent. The incentives are dependent on the motivation. What is the independent variable and dependent variable?
Hypotheis is as follows:

If the IV... Then the DV...
