What is it meant by - Is there a common difference is values of the independent variable?

Most likely the goal of this question is to figure out if you have an arithmetic sequence. If that were the case, you'd have a list of numbers such as 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, ... that were all the same distance apart. (In this case, the common difference is 3.)

This question is actually phrased very strangely, though. Normally an arithmetic sequence would be something true of the DEPENDENT variable (the output of a function or sequence) rather than the INDEPENDENT variable (the domain, or the numbers you plug into a formula). The question still has to mean whether certain numbers are a set distance apart, but it's not quite as clear what numbers they're asking about. If it really does say "independent", most likely you have a set of points and you're supposed to be comparing the x's.
