What is the dependent/independent variable in this question?

In the first scenario, you, as a medical researcher, are interesting in whether a new cholesterol lowering medication has an unwanted side effect of changing blood pressure. You randomly sample 100 adult volunteers in your community. You give 50 of the volunteers a placebo and 50 of them the cholesterol lowering drug for a month and then read their blood pressure.

Would the independent variable be the group with the placebo pill and the dependent variable the group with the actual pill? What is the dependent/independent variable in this question?
no, you are not correct. What you listed are both under the independent variables :)

independent variable: type of pill - placebo pill vs. medication pill

dependent variable: level of blood pressure

independent variable is the thing that you, the researcher, purposely changes in order to see how it will effect the results. You purposely given one group a placebo and another group medication. So they both under the independent variable

dependent variable is the results, which has to be measurable in some way. Here, you can measure it by testing the person's blood pressure. What is the dependent/independent variable in this question?
