What is an independent variable and dependent variable?

My hypothesis is that Girls are more helpful than boys.

What would the independent and dependent variable be?What is an independent variable and dependent variable?
so in other words your hypothesis would be that gender influences helpfulness.

so your independent variable would be gender

your dependent variable would be helpfulness.

good luck!
Mathematically speaking, the independent variable is the "manipulated" variable and the dependent variable changes in response to the independent variable.

If you were to graph the results, the independent variable would be plotted on the x axisand the dependent variable would be plotted on the y axis.

In your scenario, you don't have a variable that you can "control" because your statement is more of a theory ... You could create a "set-up" situation where someone needs help, then have an equal number of boys and girls encounter the scene and see who stops to help. If more girls stop to help (compared to boys) you would be able to defend your theory. Make sure you use as large a number of boys and girls as possible, it will make your results more "scientifically sound". If you only used a few girls and boys your results could be challenged or considered coincidence.

An example of an experiment that independent and dependent variables would be the effect of increased caloric intake on weight gain. Your independent (or x) variable would be varying caloric intakes (measured in calories). The dependent (or y) variable would be the weight gain associated with each caloric intake (measured in pounds).

Make sense? I hope I helped. Good luck. What is an independent variable and dependent variable?
its the terms to be on which axis on a graph.

the first on goes on the bottom, and the other one goes on the top.

the the dependent variable depends on the dependent variable.

Does that make sense? What is an independent variable and dependent variable?
An independent variable doesn't depend on another. And a dependent variable does.

For example:

y = 5x + 3

Y is a dependent variable because it increases when x increases.

X is independent.

Hope this helped.

Chris
omg i just did this in honors 8th grade science but i cant remember sryy i think dependenat is girls n being helpful independant but i cant b too sure
