You rely on your parents to give you food, shelter, love, etc - so you are dependent on them. In the same way, the dependent variable is the one that relies on something else.
In your problem, the selling price is based on, or relies on the square footage - it changes as the square footage changes. So the selling price is the dependent variable, and the square footage must be the independent variable (it doesn't rely on anything).
