Independent Variable?

In a controlled experiment, a scientist is studying how long it takes pea plants growing in different soil types to develop flower buds. What's the ind. variable?

You want to know if the amount of protein in a female rat's diet affects the average birth weight of her individual offspring. In a controlled experiment, what would be the dependent variable?

Thanks. :)Independent Variable?
In the first example, the independent variable would be the different types of soil. The dependent variable would be how much the plants grow. The experimenter controls the independent variable.

In the second example, the independent variable is the amount of protein the experimenter gives the rat in its diet. The dependent variable is the average birth weight of the offspring.
