What would be the independent variable and the dependent variable?

The question is "A doctor wants to determine whether or not reading bedtime stories affect a child's sleeping habits. Provided that the Dr. designs an experiment, what are the independent and the dependent variables?"

My answer would be that the independent variable is the bedtime story because it is what's changed or manipulated and the dependent variable is what the kids sleeping habits??

I'm confused!|||I'm assuming by 'sleeping habits' the question is referring to something along this lines of how long it takes for the child to fall asleep, how many times the he/she wakes up in the middle of the night, etc. 'sleeping habits' would probably be considered to vague of a term in psychology, so let's just assume the questioner means time it takes the child to fall asleep.

In that case, the independent variable (IV) is whether or not the doctor reads a bedtime story to the child.

The dependent variable (DV) would be the child's sleeping habits i.e. how many minutes after the story ends (or how many minutes after the child is tucked in if he gets no story) it takes the child to fall asleep.
