Independent variable?

can a place be used as independent variable. i ve this research homework and i have been researchin about the aggressive behavior between two places, cities in my state. now im not very convinced ive done the right choice. can for example use "the living place " as independent variable and aggression as dependent ??????|||Yes.

An independent variable is the variable you have control over, what you can choose and manipulate. It is usually what you think will affect the dependent variable. In some cases, you may not be able to manipulate the independent variable. It may be something that is already there and is fixed, something you would like to evaluate with respect to how it affects something else, the dependent variable like color, kind, time.

So "the living place" (I would use "residency") can be an independent variable even if you cannot manipulate it.
