What is the Independent and dependent variable from this experiment?

"Mrs. Smith's biology class is doing a lab on which trait will be best in winning a thumb wrestling match. It can either be the length of the thumb, the circumference of the wrist or the circumference of the thumb. The students use a rule, string and their thumbs in this experiment. What is the independent variable? What is the Dependent variable?"

So can anyone help me?

What's the independent variable and what's the dependent? I really don't understand =/

Thanks so much!|||Well, dependent variables rely on independent variables. So, I think the students using their thumbs to measure are the dependent variables, because their measurements would very in each individual. The ruler and string would be the independent variables, because their values do not change. Hope this helps!|||So I'm pretty sure the dependent variables are the measurements (the circumferences and lengths) and the independent variables are the 'titles' which you will label the measurements as.
